After visiting three public libraries in my area and realizing I had more books on tropical fish aquariums then all three combined, I started shopping for new, updated books. I have a couple of books that are really good, but this one has become my favorite. As a total beginner, I wanted something easy, yet concise. This book has very complete information that others were missing and it's compact so I can bring it with me to the pet stores and quickly find what I'm looking for, while browsing fish. Highly recommended if you're just starting out. As a personal note, I no longer live in Guam. The libraries I visited were in somewhat rural TN.

Full color photos of each fish. Useful information, simple format that is easy to read.

Seachem Prime 500ml

Product Description

Prime® is the complete and concentrated conditioner for both fresh and salt water. Prime® removes chlorine, chloramine and ammonia. Prime® converts ammonia into a safe, non-toxic form that is readily removed by the tanks biofilter. Prime® may be used during tank cycling to alleviate ammonia/nitrite toxicity. Prime® detoxifies nitrite and nitrate, allowing the biofilter to more efficiently remove them. It will also detoxify any heavy metals found in the tap water at typical concentration levels. Prime® also promotes the production and regeneration of the natural slime coat. Prime® is non-acidic and will not impact pH. Prime® will not overactivate skimmers. Use at start-up and whenever adding or replacing water. Nearly all companies manufacture a product that removes chlorine. None of those, however, can compare in quality, concentration, or effectiveness to Seachems flagship product: Prime®. Prime® is the second most concentrated dechlorinator on the market after our own aquavitro alpha™. A single 100 mL bottle will treat 1000 US gallons of tap water. Prime® will remove both chlorine and chloramines from municipal water supplies. Prime® also contains a binder which renders ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate non-toxic. It is very important to understand how those two functions work together. All dechlorinators operate through a chemical process known as reduction. In this process, toxic dissolved chlorine gas (Cl2) is converted into non-toxic chloride ions (Cl-). The reduction process also breaks the bonds between chlorine and nitrogen atoms in the chloramine molecule (NH2Cl), freeing the chlorine atoms and replacing them with hydrogen (H) to create ammonia (NH3). Typically, dechlorinators stop there, leaving an aquarium full of toxic ammonia! Seachem takes the necessary next step by including an ammonia binder to detoxify the ammonia produced in the reduction process.

Customer Reviews

I usually don't write reviews, but I did want to take the time to recommend this product. I have been keeping fancy goldfishes for over ten years now and finding the right tap water conditioner had always been a headache for me. I have tried most of the popular products on the market and they have always given me either mixed results or no results at all. Too often, I've had the fish die on me after a water change. However, when someone recommended the Prime water conditioner to me during a visit to the pet store, my problem was solved. I have used this product for a few years now and never since had any more fish die after a water change. I sincerely believe this is the most effective all-in-one solution on the market and for regular fish keeping, this is the only water conditioner one really needs.

I bought this water conditioner at a chain pet store. It is so effective at removing chloramines, chlorine, and ammonia that you barely need to use any at all. Just follow the directions and the bottle will last you forever if you have a modest sized tank.

Amazon.com Product Description
Fluval EDGEInspired by architectural styling, the EDGE aquarium creates a unique visual effect capturing emotion and serenity within a contemporary setting. The Fluval EDGE design includes a unique equipment casing which hides and holds all the essentials. Even wiring is beautifully hidden, allowing a good all-around view whether placed on a desk, low coffee table or kitchen top. EDGE brings an exciting new look to aquatics, combining the most modern aquarium design with the beauty of nature. The result is an utterly stylish complement to any home or office space.

Variety of Features
360 Degree Viewing
The world's first 3D water cube aquarium, the 6 gallon Fluval EDGE can be filled to the very brim thanks to the sealed glass top, providing high definition viewing from every angle. The sealed top reduces evaporation for less maintenance and a large, hidden aperture allows oxygen exchange to keep fish healthy. A floating base design gives the set a very small footprint for easy placement and lends the aquarium a clean, contemporary look.
Compact Design
The EDGE is extremely versatile due to its compact proportions. It makes a beautiful addition to any interior where space may be limited and in low light areas, it brings light and life to dull corners and uninteresting walls.
Hidden High Quality Filtration
Fluval EDGE comes complete with a powerful and efficient 3 stage filter which remains completely hidden, preserving the striking aquarium design. Featuring mechanical, chemical and biological filtration for clear, healthy water, the EDGE filter is much like Hagen's AquaClear clip on filter range, which has a long history of proven performance.
An Aquarium to Compliment Your Lifestyle
Designed to complement modern decor, EDGE is available in three stylish colors- matt black, pewter and metallic 'Murano' orange. The striking design and contemporary wrap around stand will create a talking point in your home for years to come.
Easy Assembly and Maintenance
Fluval EDGE takes only seconds to assemble and the perforated, removable cover effectively dissipates lamp heat, avoids moisture, and allows easy access to the filter's lift out media trays. A wide range of EDGE cleaning accessories are also available to make cleaning simple.
Versatile Design
The Fluval EDGE aquarium has been designed for today's lifestyle with a contoured casing module and a 6-sided glass tank. Whether in an ultra-modern or more traditional setting, this versatile aquarium adds the 'designer' look to almost any room in the home. The gentle flow of water and glow of the lighting produce a beautiful shimmering effect reminiscent to sunlight on open water.
Visually StunningA powerful, retractable halogen lighting system creates a visually stunning display. The two 10 watt bulbs create a bright, directional light source for a beautiful 'shimmer' effect across your entire aquatic scene.

Economical and Quiet
EDGE is quiet, powerful and easy to use, while still being extremely economical due to the low voltage halogen bulbs.
Display Anywhere in Your HomeThe Fluval EDGE has been designed to be filled to the top. The action of the filter provides all the oxygen exchange fish need. This means that the aquarium can be positioned at a lower level and viewed clearly from above through the glass top, unhindered by equipment or trailing wires.
Inspired by architectural styling, the Fluval Edge Aquarium is a three-dimensional, 6-gallon water cube that provides a unique visual effect capturing emotion and serenity of an aquarium within a contemporary setting. The sealed glass top provides high-definition viewing and reduces evaporation for less maintenance. The Fluval Edge Aquariums retractable halogen lighting system is suitable for aquatic plants and casts a unique shimmering effect on the water. Two 10-watt low-voltage halogen bulbs provide economical lighting. The lighting fixture swivels up and out of the way to provide easy access to the filter and the aquarium. The Fluval Edge Aquarium comes equipped with a removable cover for easy aquarium and filter access. The overhead ventilation grill dissipates lamp heat and avoids moisture. The powerful Fluval Edge filter with 3-stage filtration is easy to use and ensures clear water and a healthy environment. The hang-on Edge filter is quiet, hidden from view, powerful and easy to use. The constant cascade from the filter oxygenates water and 3-stage filtration ensures a clear and healthy environment. The mechanical foam filter traps particles and debris. The carbon insert provides chemical filtration, absorbing odors, discolorations and impurities. The BioMax insert expands biological capacity to encourage growth of friendly bacteria. Thanks to the attached base/backing/canopy, the filter is completely hidden from view but is easily accessible and easy to maintain by removing the top canopy. The Fluval Edge Aquarium is extremely versatile, perfect for any home or office. Its compact proportions make it a beautiful addition to any interior decor where space may be limited. In low-light areas the aquarium glows like a jewel, bringing light and life to dull or uninteresting walls.

Customer Reviews

I've had my Fluval Edge tank for almost 10 months now. I've owned a 29 gal and 10 gal tank before so I've had decent experience with freshwater tanks (not saltwater). I recently moved and wanted to get a small fish tank (4 gal at most) to add to my room, but my boyfriend talked me into getting the Fluval Edge because I could actually have a decent aquarium. We both liked the modern look of the tank too. I have 2 real wood logs, 2 live plants, 3 glolite tetras, 3 full-grown ghost shrimp (about 3" in length), 2 small suckerfish (they're almost smaller than the ghost shrimp), and about 2" in gravel bottom.
Now that it's been almost 10 months, I still love my tank and think every penny I spent on it was worth it. There are some funny quirks that serious aquarist would rather skip, but none of the quirks have deterred me from my love of the tank.
Pros:
-I love the modern look. I like how my cords and pump are all hidden and out of view. I hate buying those fake aquarium backings to hide everything.
-I like the 360 view. I like being able to look into my tank from the top and clearly see through to the bottom. It helps to keep track of my fish too.
-I like how it's a sturdy glass. Hagen didn't cheap on the glass construction. When you pick it up (it's a little heavy), you know you have a quality glass tank.
-Halogen lights give off a nice heat that actually helps heat the tank. I live in a place that has an average yearly temperature of about 67. So the extra heat from the lights help keep my tank warm.
-Halogen lights make my fish/plants look fine. I've had no "bleaching" issues with the lights. The fish retain their color just fine and I know what they look like when they are bleached (my fish were PALE when I moved).
-Filtration system works like a charm. I can stir up the bottom organic material to get it pretty turbid, but the pump/filters can clear it up in about 15 minutes. I change my filters regularly as is suggested, but you could probably go longer as long as you rinsed them every once in a while.
-I've had no problems with the tank that warrant any complaints. The minor quirks is as bad as it's gotten for me.
Cons/Quirks:
-The Fluval Edge heater (bought separately) only heats the water to about 2 degrees above the ambient temperature. This would be fine if I lived somewhere warm, but I live along the central coast of California and we're lucky if the weather gets hotter than 70 degrees. So sometimes my water gets down to 72 degrees even with the heater on or won't trigger quickly enough because the ambient temperature is within range. Get a different heater.
-The pump seems to be a little strong for my fish. My fish and shrimp swim fine in the tank, but since there's a small opening for food placement, tetras have to catch the food quickly or it gets pushed to the bottom before they can get to it. Not a big issue because the shrimp eat the excess food, I watch my fish to make sure they're eating enough, and I put flakes in at the corner furthest away from the inflow of water to keep the food on the surface longer, but it's still a little annoying. My fish do like to swim underneath the inflow of water and "play" in it, though. Anyway, delicate fish might not be ideal with the pump.
-Halogen lights don't disperse enough light to allow for flowering plants. Not a big issue again because I just replaced my more delicate plant (thinner leaves and flowered) with a plant with broader leaves and the plants are doing great. They're getting really big and my shrimp and suckerfish love the "levels" they can hide on.
-Lights do grow a green algae that can get pretty tough if left sitting long enough. If you've got a good suckerfish, shouldn't be a problem. Mine are pretty whimpy and did well the first few weeks I got them and now are kind of lazy.
-Hard to clean. Not a big issue again, but I bought a magnetic algae cleaner (non-Hagen brand), hand scrubber, and scrubber with handle. The scrubber with the handle works great, but can only be used for the back of the tank. Because of the opening, the handle gets in the way of allowing you to get the top, front of the tank. So the magnetic algae cleaner (really quite great) gets to the areas I can't or I just use the scrubber without the handle. I actually recommend the magnetic algae cleaners. The one I have makes life really easy.
-Had to buy the Fluval Edge fish net. Do NOT buy a NORMAL fish net with this tank! It will be worthless, stress your fish out, and make you want to do something bad to your tank, fish, or net. My boyfriend and I spent easily 1.5 hours trying to catch my fish/shrimp when I was moving and it was a huge frustration. The only way we got the shrimp finally (even with only a quarter of water left) was we put a plastic bag into the tank and herded the shrimp and fish into it. The Fluval Edge fish net, though, is a triangle shape and allows you to get into the corner of the tank with the opening. It's not perfect, but makes life a WHOLE lot easier. Definitely worth the buy to lower your fish and your stress level.
-Small concern about the glass tank hanging over the base. I live in California where there are earthquakes. It'd have to be an earthquake of the century for it to shake the tank off the base (it's kind of "hooked on" by the lid/pump to the base) thanks to how heavy it is with the water and glass tank, but it does kind of run through my head. It has survived perfectly fine through a few high 3's and a low 4, though.
As I said, the cons aren't really cons, but more quirks. You have to be willing to put up with the small quirks, but it hasn't affected anything for me.
A few comments on other reviews:
-I agree that if you had dual breathing fish this tank wouldn't be the best for you.
-My halogen lights have had no problems whatsoever. I haven't had to replace them or clean them. They look a little dirty, but nothing bad enough that requires me to clean them. They do heat up the metal grating at the top of the lid, but not enough to burn me, melt the cover, or allow for rusting to occur (I suspect the rusting occurred because it was a saltwater tank and less because of the lights). It's kind of a nice warmth you can rest your hand on and it's fine. Plus, as I said earlier, the heat helps heat my tank. The sockets of the lights have been fine too.
-The halogen lights wouldn't be ideal for jumping fish. I wouldn't be surprised if the fish got hurt if they jumped at a light.
-The button at the top and the cover, for me, have also been fine. The button turns and you can remove the cover if you want, but I leave mine on for added protection. No issues there.
-Bottom intake water pipe-thing is pretty open for anyone who wants to breed fish/shrimp and/or have smaller fish. I'd buy the extra thing to put over it to make sure your fish don't get sucked up into the filter. For me, I don't need it, but it would be needed for smaller fish (as in anything baby size).
Anyway, when it's all said and done...if you want a nice looking tank and don't mind putting in heartier fish/shrimp/plants into your tank, this tank will work just fine for you. The quirks I've had with it are manageable and don't require that much extra work, money, or time. If you don't want to mess with the fuss and the look doesn't grab you, don't buy it. If you like the look as I do and don't mind the quirks, I'd say go for it. I'd recommend the tank to anyone based off of my current review. The quirks aren't bad enough for me to not recommend it and the pros outweigh the quirks. I only give it a 4/5 because of the quirks. It's not perfect so shouldn't deserve a perfect rating.
======== UPDATE ==========
12/16/10 - It has been almost 11 months to the day I bought my Fluval Edge and ONE of the halogen lights finally died on me. Easy replacement (pull out the old one, put in the new one). I'm wondering when the 2nd one will die now.
I also mentioned in my review not to buy a normal fish net. I'm going to suggest to buy both. Buy a small regular rectangle net and buy the Fluval Edge net. At minimum, just do the Fluval Edge net and forget the regular one. I find, for whatever reason, I use the regular fish net for day-to-day things (smoothing gravel, moving things, catching the easy fish, etc) and will use the Fluval Edge one more for removing air bubbles and catching my hard-to-catch fish and shrimp.
One thing I did not mention earlier is a trick to remove air bubbles if your tank isn't level: Use your Fluval Edge net and simply shove it near the air bubbles at the top and "move" or "pull" the air bubbles out to the opening. Takes a few back-and-forth motions, but gets them out EVERY time with no other fuss. My tank is always 100% full without air bubbles. It always impresses people when they see the tank is 100% full too.
------
08/10/11 - I wanted to do another update now that it's been over 1.5 years of having the tank. It's been through 3 moves (pretty much the same fish, except I now have 3 neon tetras, lost a glolite tetra (from age, it was always my biggest one from the start), and 2 of my shrimp died (presumably from age too)) and I just wanted to warn people who decide to move their tanks. My first two moves I pretty much packed the tank (base, cover, and glass tank) as it would be set-up in a box and stuffed it so it doesn't shift. It was fine after both moves. This last and most recent move, I was a little less careful because the box I had would only fit the tank and nothing else and I was in a rush. Well...Everything did okay except the cover. I kind of threw all the... Read more›

Fluval (Hagen)has an almost winner here. When set up it looks stunning, the plants grow right out the top of the tank even with no CO2 and with the standard lighting, but! just try to maintain this tank and you will shortly begin looking for another tank. The provided access port is so small it is near impossible to clean the substrate, or work with plants. Catching a determined fast shrimp will have you looking for glass cutters! I hope that when Hagen creates a successor to this tank they find a way to allow useble access.

Customer Reviews

Initially had a 5 star review and had to update it. After 6 months of ownership, I've had nothing but trouble with this system. The aquarium itself is OK... hard to mess up a block of glass and some plastic I guess. But the entire hood including bulbs, ballasts, and fans is just a poorly designed money pit. The fans do nothing but squeal for 10 minutes when they first come on. Originals did that and even the free replacements are now doing it. Already had to replace the $30 actinic bulb after only 6 months, and finally had to take out the bio balls as they were loading the tank with nitrates (common problem with bio balls). The hood traps all heat too, and I had to install a supplementary fan to remove heat from inside the aquarium. Finally, every time I take the hood off to do a cleaning and water change, if I don't set the hood down with a feather light touch, the daylight bulb has to be reseated before it'll work again as the connector isn't a good quality connector. This seemed like a simple and effective kit when I first bought it, hence the initial 5 star review. It's not until after the tank cycles and the electronics have been in use for a few months that you realize how much effort it takes to get this setup stable and working properly for a reef tank. After all my fiddling, improvements, and replacement parts, I've got it working but I dropped my rating considering all the quality issues I've had. If the hood electronics weren't such low quality, I'd probably rate it 4 stars.

This is the worst product you can buy. I bought a 29G biocube and after couple of months it started to leak. I tried to communicate to manufacturer and received no response for a while. You pay a lot of money for this piece of junk and they don't even test the sealing of the product. No real customer service and your warranty doesn't mean anything.
Never going to buy any Oceanic product.

The top-mounted, three-stage system combines simple, elegant styling with superior performance efficiency. All water is filtered through the high-performance Eclipse Rite-Size Filter Cartridge and then directed to the patented Marineland BIO-Wheel. The result: 100% water-to-media contact for excellent water quality, and a healthier environment for plants and fish. Easy to install, easy to operate, the Eclipse System provides unlimited, unhindered access to the entire aquarium. The specially selected fluorescent daylight bulb is ideal for plant growth and ornamental fish color enhancement. This is a great starter aquarium. Order a book or two about having fish when you order the aquarium too and wait a week before getting fish.
In years past you'd have all sorts of work with the filters and such. With the bio-wheel that comes with this tank your only work is to occasionally replace the "physical filter" and do a partial water change. That's it! The tank also comes with a beautiful light that'll really make your fish shine.
You will need some gravel too and some plants and maybe a stone or two for the fish to hide behind. The gravel and such are best picked up at your local pet store. Start out with plastic plants rather than live plants; you'll have plenty to do anyway.
In my experience things are easier if you have a heater too. The fish likes the water temperature to be constant. I've been using a 150w heater with good success in this tank.
Let the tank run with the heater for a day or two to get the temperature stable. When you add your first fish, start out with just a few small fish (actually, in a 12 gallon tank you should always only have small fish, little tetras and such -- don't worry, they are beautiful) to get the bio-wheel going. Your books will explain it, but it takes some time for the biological processes to get going in the tank and keep things in balance, so the water can get poisonous quickly for your fish if you add too many. (Get a packet of test strips to test the water quality daily -- it's just when you get started, later the bio-wheel will keep things steady unless you keep too many fish in the tank).
I can also recommend getting another tank, maybe a 3 gallon tank, to keep new fish in before they go in the main tank. (Of course that only works if you keep small fish, with bigger fish the 12 gallon tank would be your quarantine tank...) :-)
Good luck!

I think this is an Excellent Small to Midrange Aquarium set. I've been using this aquarium for 3 years now and am very pleased with it.
It is an acrylic tank - not glass, so that's the first factor to consider. The difference is that it will be lighter than a glass tank but acrylic can get all scratched up when you're trying to do stuff like scrape algae off - just be careful to not scrub so hard or use abrasive cleaners that can scratch or smoke up the acrylic.
I think that 12 gallons is a perfect size for a small area. You can have one larger fish in there, or several small ones. The 12 gallon size gives you a good amount of space so you have more options on what kind and how many fish you want to keep in there.
The hinged lid houses the filtration and lighting system while keeping the aquarium covered so that things don't inadvertently fall in, or critters getting out. I think a good lid is very important for a fish tank, sometimes things drop in, sometimes critters try to get out...and if you want eels - they are notorious escape artists, so you really need to seal up the top of the tank. This lid makes it easier to do so.
The filtration system is one of the best that I've owned. I can't believe how clean it keeps the tank. I only change out the water every 6 months or so, but not because I can see gunk in the tank, but because I know that I should. Actually, I think I'm supposed to clean it more...but the unit runs so perfectly, I just don't see the need...and if I don't see the need, I don't really do it...so the excellent filtration system can be a good or bad thing. My tank is just always so crystal clear, it's wonderful to have such an easy tank to keep up. People are always asking me how I keep my tank looking so clean and perfect, and it's great to know that I don't have to do anything at all! lol, just make sure that the filtration system is plugged in. Of course, I do have to clean the Eclipse carbon filter out every couple of months. That does collect up quite a bit of "gunk". I just rinse out all the gunk and put the cleaned filter back in. After about 6 times of doing this, the filter gets pretty beat up, so I'll replace it. The replacement cartridges are not expensive.
The lighting is great and sufficient to light up the entire tank including some space around it. It's cool to have it in a dark room and have this as the sole lighting. It can act as a night light or whatnot. After 3 years of daily use, I have not had to replace the bulb either.
You have to supply your own gravel, plants, accessories, and of course - the fish. I would highly recommend this aquarium. It's a compact unit for being 12 gallons, the filtration system works perfectly, the light is great, and the panoramic view really showcases your fish well. I have no complaints on this tank whatsoever and would recommend it to anyone.
